Roofing Basics
Why your roof`s pitch may cost you
When obtaining a roofing quotation, the supervisor or salesman will need to
determine the incline of the roof, also know as pitch. The steeper the pitch, the more difficult it is to work on the roof; inherently increasing the cost of labour.
The angle, or pitch of a roof is calculated by the number of inches it rises vertically for every 12 inches it extends horizontally. For example, a roof that rises 6 inches for every 12 inches of horizontal run has a 6-in-12 pitch.
Most roofing companies are equipped with tools to accurately and quickly measure your roof's angle.
Flashing
Flashing are metal strips that seal the seams and joints of the roof. They are typically where leaks are most likely to
occur such as wall edges, or chimneys.
Excess leaves and debris in the valleys or seams of your roof can result in rusting of the metal flashing causing leaks.
In many cases the flashing can be cleaned and restored if caught early. If the damage is progressive, it may need to be replaced.
Utilizing a professional's expertise is recommended to ensure repairs are done correctly and safely..
